Benefits of Going Green in Your Kitchen

Dec 10, 2013

If you are a homeowner looking to build or remodel your kitchen many questions begin to arise. What kind of cabinetry do I want? What countertops should I pick? But have you ever considered building a “green” kitchen? There are many benefits associated with a green kitchen such as, energy savings, sustainability and a safe environment.

Go Green

To begin, replace older major appliances with the most resource-efficient models, within your budget and only as large as you need. “Refrigerators and dishwashers that are more than 10 years old and stoves that are more than 20 years old typically are inefficient and polluting,” according to Green Home Guide. Refrigerators use 14 percent of homes electricity. Today’s most efficient 20-cubic-foot refrigerators use 47 percent less electricity than older versions.

Secondly, choose countertops made from recyclable materials. They are typically cheaper, easier to clean and highly durable. Here are a few examples:

  • Stainless Steel: Uses salvaged metal or high recycled content if possible
  • Terrazzo: Look for locally manufactured products with high recycled glass content, preferably post-consumer
  • Laminate: Look for laminate made from recycled plastic that has been glued to formaldehyde-free substrate with nontoxic glues

Lastly, choose green cabinets made from recycled or renewable resources such as Moso Bamboo or coconut palm. Using these materials will conserve natural resources, avoid volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and contribute to a safe and healthy indoor environment.
