How to Create Functional Drawer Space

Aug 10, 2016

We all have messy drawers, some packed with knives, utensils and other oddities and some we haven’t opened in at least a year. It’s easy to toss things into a drawer and see if it shuts (and even the tidiest of us is guilty), but if you’re done with over-stuffed drawers and not being able to find that one vegetable peeler you swear you put back, you need these tips.

Storage Dividers drawer space

Possibly the most effective way to organize a kitchen drawer, dividers and drawer spacers separate out silverware or utensils into neat categories for easy access. Dividers also remove the possibility of overcrowding these storage spaces.

Create Organization Themes

By creating a category for each drawer you’ll prevent over-packing and maintain an organized space. If you assign utensils of a certain theme (knives, tools, silverware, etc.) you’ll always know where something is and if you follow the rule of a certain drawer, you won’t clutter the most convenient one.

Downsize, Donate, Give Away

Let’s be honest, most of us don’t use every utensil in our kitchen. Maybe it’s that cherry pitter that only comes out a couple days in July or the copious amount of bottle openers you’ve received from various parties and giveaways. One of the easiest ways to organize and clear space is to get rid of the things you don’t need or use anymore. Find a friend who loves new kitchen toys or collect a box of utensils and take them down to the local Goodwill or soup kitchen.
