When we hear the word “apartment,” our minds generally think “small,” “cluttered” and sometimes, “blah.” However, the size of your apartment doesn’t have to inhibit your design aspirations. Think of it more as a blank canvas with endless personalization opportunities. Maximize your design style with space, color and other unique elements. Here are 10 ideas you probably haven’t even considered.
1.) Adopt Neutrals
Choose a neutral paint color for the walls and window treatments rather than bold or rich colors. Neutrals make the room appear larger, and then you can use accent pieces to enhance your color palette.
2.) Pops of Color
If you find yourself struggling to enlarge a narrow space, throw down a bright accent rug. The pop of color on the floor will draw your eyes toward the floor. It opens the floor plan, without having to remove walls.
3.) New Life to Furniture
Some apartments don’t allow walls to be painted. Don’t let that discourage your design visions. Paint your furniture instead! It incorporates your personal style while adding accent colors to the space.
4.) Think vertical
Rather than cluttering a space with objects on the floor and walls, think height! Adding floor to ceiling shelving will add storage and places to display accent pieces, which will also provide a focal point that elongates the walls.
5.) Homemade Foyer
If your apartment doesn’t have an official entryway, create one with a standing bookshelf or other tall piece of furniture. It will help break up rooms plus add a place to store shoes, coats and other accessories.
6.) Mirror Mirror
Mirrors are a lifesaver when it comes to adding space. They reflect light which brightens a small space while adding dimension.
7.) Mounted Tube
Utilize your TV for added functionality. Mount it on the wall to reduce space that would have formerly been used for a TV cabinet. That way, it doubles as an accent piece for your design plan.
8.) Conceal with Color
Have awkward nooks and crannies in your apartment? Embrace them! Use them for added storage at no expense to your furniture layout design. Cover them with bright shower curtains or drapes- Hello, accent piece!
9.) Photo Bomb
Photos are the simplest way to fill an empty wall. Purchase frames slightly larger than the photo so the white matting adds a bright element to the walls.
10.) Added Ambiance
Lighting is one of the most important elements of a room. Use floor lamps for a greater area of lighting coverage, hang ceiling pendants to save space and add table lamps for a cozy, natural light feel.
