Flooring Surfaces for Your Heated Flooring

Nov 17, 2014

Heated flooring has been rising in popularity the last few years.  A heated flooring system is very difficult to install once the floor has been installed.  The best time to install a heated flooring system is during a remodel.  Once you have chosen between an electrical or hydronic system you will need to select your flooring material. Here is a review of flooring options and how they work with a heated flooring system.

Tile – Tile is a great choice because is conducts and transfers heat.  Tile also maintains heat at a high temperature for long period of time.
Hardwood – Hardwood flooring can shrink and expand when temperatures fluctuate.  This can leave gaps.  If you are set on hardwood heated floor an experienced wood floor installer will be able to manage potential shrinkage.
Vinyl – Vinyl and plastic laminate flooring is limited which is understandable given that heat is one of assembling processes.
Carpet – This is usually not a great choice because carpet’s insulating properties have the potential to reduce heat flow.

Tile is the best option for heated flooring, but not the only one available.
