Kitchen clutter seems to accumulate on its own, and it can make functioning in the kitchen efficiently nearly impossible. Here are some tips to tame the clutter:
- Create a zone for all the paper that comes into the home. If there isn’t a desk in the kitchen, assign a small cabinet. Outfit it with baskets to collect keys, mail and schoolwork. Attaching a simple cork or chalkboard surface to the inside of the door creates a convenient place to corral important notes and reminders.
- Clear the surfaces every night. The kitchen counter and table easily become a dumping ground for everyone in the family. By the end of the day, piles of mail, schoolwork and other projects accumulate. Make a habit of clearing that clutter on a daily basis to keep the problem for becoming overwhelming.
- Find a place for everything. Too many small appliances on the countertops will quickly make the kitchen look cluttered and eat up valuable prep space. Make room in the cabinets for all but the couple used on a daily basis, and put the rest away between uses.
- The kitchen is the ultimate multitasker. The average family kitchen is also a homework station, craft room and office. If that is the reality for your kitchen, create zones for each purpose. Set up a child’s table for crafting if space allows and carve out a nook for the office. Then when it’s time to clean up, everyone will know where to put things away.
- Keep the refrigerator door clear. Instead of covering the surfaces with magnets anchoring schoolwork and shopping lists, hang a bulletin board nearby. A clear fridge goes a long way to reducing kitchen clutter.
Today’s kitchens serve as hubs for busy families, and that can lead to a lot of clutter. Keeping these simple tips in mind will help keep your hub efficient, organized and company-ready.
