Here at Kitchen Kraft, we understand that a client needs more than a kitchen designer. Anyone can tell you something looks nice, but if current problems are not solved it doesn’t matter how it looks. We can’t tell you how many times a client has brought us a competitor’s designs without a dishwasher in the plan. This alone is a major problem and though we don’t like to point these things out, we already know there is a problem because they have sought us out, designs in-hand, asking for a second opinion.

More often than not, clients tell us what upsets them. What we find interesting is that it takes two or three warning signs before a client will seek help elsewhere. Here’s a list of the complaints or things lacking from other companies that we have heard more than once over the years:

• Problem solver: This may sound simplistic but if a designer doesn’t address existing issues like functionality and storage, or appliance location, then that doesn’t solve your problems with the current space. For example, forgetting that dishwasher in the initial stages means that the design will need to be re-done which means you now have more problems than you started with.
• Re-sale value: A good designer will be familiar with surrounding property values and should be able to discuss how much of your investment you will get back. They should also be respectful of the budget you discussed and show you products that won’t price you out of the neighborhood.
• Your Space Not Theirs: Believe it or not we have heard of designers that are designing for their own ego. If your designer is not listening to you or addressing your concerns, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Given the amount of information that is available to homeowners who are considering kitchen remodeling through numerous channels such as Houzz, HGTV and DIY Networks, websites, etc. kitchen designers need to be more than just a salesperson. They need to educate homeowners and be able to come up with solutions, not more problems.
