The Evolution of the Kitchen Backsplash

The kitchen backsplash started with a functional purpose, to protect the wall from splatters and stained food.  Tile backsplashes have become common and glass tile backsplashes are one of the hottest kitchen trends today.  Like most functional items the backsplash has evolved into a unifying element in kitchen design.  Glass tile is surprisingly universal and can be used in transitional, classical and modern design.  What started out as a protective wall covering is becoming a design statement.  Check out the use of glass tiles in these three kitchens.

The blend of stone and glass is a great backsplash for a transitional kitchen.  Just look at how this backsplash pulls the traditional and modern elements together in this transitional kitchen remodel.  The stone compliments the warm wood floor, counters and traditional hardware while the glass underlines the painted cabinets and modern appliances.  The designer took the transitional design to a new level by running the tiles upward, creating a mural and adding another focal point.  The mural also subtly compliments the other clean lines in the design.

The light gray tile utilized on this backsplash is the perfect understated component of this modern kitchen.  The gray tile also utilizes the classic black, white color palate but lets the contrast of the espresso cabinets and white counters take a front seat.  White grout also adds to the clean lines of the modern design without overstating the clean lines in the design.
