The kitchen sink is an integral part of the functionality of any kitchen. There are many types of sinks to choose from and stainless steel is a popular choice. Many homeowners love the longevity and durability of a stainless steel sink. If you are thinking of replacing your sink in a full scale kitchen remodel or even updating your countertop, here are some things to consider about stainless steel sinks.
Material – Stainless steel is a steel that has been combined with other elements to create properties it would not have alone. Stainless steel sinks are labeled by the amount of chromium and nickel in the steel. The higher the percentage of added elements the better the grade. The grade is specified by a number known as a “series”. Most sinks are usually in the 300 series, or to be specific, the 304 series. This series is a good quality steel with 18-20% Chromium and 8-10% nickel.
Gauge – Gauge refers the thickness of the metal. The lower the gauge the higher the quality of material. The higher the gauge, 22 for example, the thinner the edges, meaning they are not a good fit for the weight of a higher quality faucet or a garbage disposal. A 22 gauge sink is also prone to denting, vibrating and can be very noisy. A 16 to 18 gauge sink is higher quality and the better quality will reduce noise, denting and vibrating.
Shape – You get more volume with square corners and straight sides and a flat bottom, but soft angles enhance easy cleaning and good drainage.
Noise – Rubbery undercoating or pads can deaden the sound of running water and clanging glasses or silverware. It can also reduce the amount of condensation in the base cabinets. If it sounds like a drum when you administer the thump test the sink is either lightweight or has no additional coating. There will be a metallic sound but the amount of noise is dependent upon the thickness of the material.
